LASSIE
Lassie received critical favor at its debut and won two Emmy Awards in its first years. Stars Jan Clayton and June Lockhart were nominated for Emmys. Merchandise produced during the show’s run included books, a Halloween costume, clothing, toys, and other items. Campbell’s Soup, the show’s lifelong sponsor, offered two premiums (a ring and a wallet), and distributed thousands to fans. A multi-part episode was edited into the feature film Lassie’s Great Adventure and released in August 1963. In 1989, the television series The New Lassie brought Lassie star Jon Provost back to television as Steve McCullough. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The history of the show Collie in the United States began with the Westminster show of 1878 when eleven males, five females, and three puppies, were exhibited. Among thes was Mr. T.W. Lawson’s “Tam O’Shanter,” imported from scotland and claiming the fabulous price of one thousnad dollars. On the average, the American Collie of today is and inch or two taller and slightly heavier than his English counterpart. The entire head section is longer and heavier in proportion, especially in the foreface or muzzle. A dog of high intelligence like the Collie is very trainable. This breed presents an impressive appearance in the conformation ring. the conformation ring. The characteristic that possibly gives the strongest visual impact is the luxuriant, dense, long coat of the rough Collie. Though, to coin a phrase, the Collie is not simply all beauty and no brains. Tales of his courage and intelligence in protection of human as well as animal charges are numerous. Like most modern breeds that have been cultivated mainly as pets, the Collie has learned to adapt to a number of varying climates. But, cold, rugged weather conditions are what he became accustomed to in the Scottish and Welsh lands of his origins where he herded sheep under the most unrelenting conditions of weather and terrain, as his heavy coat indicates. Kept exclusively outdoors, the Collie would develop an even shaggier, heavier coat as protection against the elements.

Doggone fun for toddlers!
His friends at Art Instruction tried to buck him up. “To us it looks sure-fire and we are convinced it will be one of the nation’s top cartoons,” wrote Walter J. Wilwerding that summer, adding, “We are of course proud as Punch over the whole business,” and predicted “ PEANUTS and SCHULZ will be two names to remember.” One other
name had to be changed before publication. The nameless little white-and black dog who had appeared in Li’l Folks and several Post cartoons was now slated to reappear in the strip as Sniffy. Then, one day during his lunch hour at Art Instruction, as Sparky was walking around the Powers department store in uptown Minneapolis, he passed a magazine stand displaying a new comic book about a dog of that very name. “Oh, no, there goes my dog’s name,” and he started back for the office, where he could imagine himself sitting at his drawing board under a thunder cloud, trying to gin up alternatives. Then it came to him as he walked. His mother had said that if the family ever had another dog, they should call him Snoopy.

Rufus Thomas – “Walking The Dog” (1963)
Name for: Long, Hot days of summer
Also refers to : sluggish summer stock market, slow summer months of Congress.
When the summer heat sets in for a long, sultry spell, we’ve entered the dog days. Traditionally running from July 3 to August 11, the dog days have long been associated with uncomfortable heat, searing sun, steaming pavement, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, disease, and, at one time, mad dogs. But we have to look elsewhere for the origin of the term. ancient Romans noticed that the really hot days come along with the rising of Sirius, the dog Star, in the Canis Major constellation. Since it’s the brightest star in the heavens, they reasoned that it somehow contributed to the sun’s heat. Being 8.7 light-years away from Earth and 50 trillion miles distant, Sirius has no effect whatsoever on our temperature. Still , the phrase “dog days” stuck, and the fact that there were more crazed dogs in late summer helped.

Several monikers on the 2012 list of most popular puppy names (Max, Charlie, Lucy) have a comforting familiarity. As pets become integrated family members and people develop deeper bonds with their dogs, it makes sense that the owners would choose to name a pet as they would a human child. Loyalty and companionship are basic needs that a faithful, loving pooch can provide, but how well do you know what your dog is thinking? What motivates his actions, and how much does he actually learn through human cohabitation and observation? Husband-and-wife authors Hare (a professor of evolutionary anthropology and founder of the Duke Canine Cognition Center) and Woods (a research scientist and author) present their extensive scientific research on dognition (a playful portmanteau for dog cognition) in an informed and fetching style while pointing to the domestication of man’s best friend as evidence of dogs’ unique social intelligence and the survival of the friendliest. The Genius of Dogs will fascinate any dog lover who longs to gain a better understanding of our devoted canine friends. –Chris Keech –This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Jane Wyman
The powerful bond between humans and dogs is one that’s uniquely cherished. Loyal, obedient, and affectionate, they are truly “man’s best friend.” But do dogs love us the way we love them? Emory University neuroscientist Gregory Berns had spent decades using MRI imaging technology to study how the human brain works, but a different question still nagged at him: What is my dog thinking?
After his family adopted Callie, a shy, skinny terrier mix, Berns decided that there was only one way to answer that question—use an MRI machine to scan the dog’s brain. His colleagues dismissed the idea. Everyone knew that dogs needed to be restrained or sedated for MRI scans. But if the military could train dogs to operate calmly in some of the most challenging environments, surely there must be a way to train dogs to sit in an MRI scanner.
With this radical conviction, Berns and his dog would embark on a remarkable journey and be the first to glimpse the inner workings of the canine brain. Painstakingly, the two worked together to overcome the many technical, legal, and behavioral hurdles. Berns’s research offers surprising results on how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom.
How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love, respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional intelligence.
