To appreciate fully the story behind the relocation of the Jets, it is necessary to have an historical fix on the changing fortunes of pro football in New York. And when that perspective is obtained, one man assumes center stage. His name is David A. (Sonny) Werblin. If it weren’t for his feud with Hess, a former business partner, the Giants might still be playing in New York-and so, ironically, might the Jets. Werblin is one of a kind. Some would say that making money is his greatest talent. Others talk about his persuasive powers over a negotiating table behind closed doors. Either way, he’s a man who’s earned enormous respect, not so much out of fear as out of admiration for his financial genius. Solid and staunch, you always know where you stand with Werblin. I’ve never known him to lie about his intentions, and he isn’t given to flying off in a wild-eyed, intemperate rage if you happen to disagree with him. Which isn’t to say he won’t try to fight back on his own terms. If he’s pinned in a corner, he will counter by omission, not commission-i.e., he’ll keep his mouth shut and cast a wary eye on developments. A smile from Werblin can light up a room, and he travels with ease and grace through all levels of society. Gracious and charming, he thrives on being the center of attention, though not in a flamboyant way, and he’ll never use ten words when five will suffice. He’s a traditional, pinstriped businessman. I could never imagine Werblin leaving New York for Hollywood and switching to suede loafers, hip-hugging pants, and silk shirts, like Carroll Rosenbloom did. Though his legal residence for political purposes is Rumsen, New Jersey, Werblin is a lock, stock, and barrel New Yorker, maintain a suite in the Lombardy Hotel. That said, however, there comes a time in the lives of a lot of men when retribution takes hold of their hearts and minds. They are powerless in its grip. Getting even becomes an intoxicating drug. Little thought is given to the consequences of their vengeance. That’s what happened to Werblin. And despite his profoundly affecting love for New York, that’s why the greatest city in the world is today without a pro football team. At this juncture, let me say that no sportman-not O’Malley, not Rosenbloom, not Davis-ever dreamed of concocting a scenario like the creation of the Meadowlands in New Jersey. And even if they had, I don’t believe they could have pulled it off. What Werblin engineered was the most extraordinary exercise in political manipulation ever conceived in the name of sports. First, he forged an unholy alliance with an old adversary, Wellington Mara of the New York Giants, and then he took the state of New Jersey and turned it into his own personal play-ground. Here, then as succinctly as I can, a brief backgrounder, the better to grasp the full sweep of the Jets’ removal across the Hudson River. Werblin has the finest promotional mind I have ever encountered in the field of fashionable diversions. That mind was developed in show business. As one of the three principals in the renowned Music Corporation of America, along with Lew Wasserman and the late Jules Stein, Werblin helped mold the careers of people such as Sinatra, Jackie Gleason, and Williams, Ozzie and Harriet, Ed Sullivan, and others-some of the greatest stars in entertainment. He carried that acumen into sports. He teamed up with his best friends-Hess and three now dead: socialite Townsend Martin, dress manufacturer Phil Lselin, and stockbroker Don Lillis-and they formed a partnership to buy Monmouth Park racetrack in New Jersey. Together, these men also bought the bankrupt New York Titans in the old American Football League for less than $1 million, changed their name to the Jets, and moved the team into Shea stadium. The rest is history. Werblin changed the map of professional football. He did it in two simple ways. First, thanks to his friendship with Robert Sarnoff, who was running NBC, he was able to negotiate a $34 million contract with that network. That was in 1964, and those television proceeds, pooled among all AFL teams, gave them the financial power to bargain equally in the marketplace with the NFL. Second, he made the continuation of the war for players a form of economic suicide for both leagues by driving up salaries to what was then the point of no return. Werblin accomplished that in 1965 when he signed quarterback Joe Namath out of Alabama for more than $400,000. Thus Werblin became the unwitting catalyst for the merger of the two leagues-a merger he never wanted. Also, with that one act, he hastened the advent of the age of big-time sports as big-time sports as big-time entertainment-and the first superstar of that era was Joe Willie Namath. Werblin’s shrewd eye for talent was rarely more in evidence than on January 12, 1969, when Namath led the Jets to an astounding upset over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III-and gave the merger between the leagues instant recognition and credibility.

“It was a great game,” Wootten remembered. “I thought my team played as well as itj possibly could. It went back and forth all night, and they finally made a play at the end and beat us by one in triple overtime. It was one of those games where you couldn’t feel bad about losing because it was such a good game and my kids had played so hard and so well. I left there feeling high about the whole thing. “The next day, as normal, Red came over to St. John’s to play tennis. He said hello, we chatted for a few minutes, and he never said a word about the game. finally, I couldn’t resist. I said, ‘Red, what’d you think you think of that game last night” He paused and looked at me and finally said, ‘I felt bad for you.’ I said something about it being a tough loss and all, and he shook his head and said, ‘No, that’s not it. I think it’s a shame that you cost your team that game.’I was stunned. i think I said something like, ‘Huh? “He said, ‘You lost the feel of the game. In the time-outs, you weren’t having any trouble scoring. You never having trouble on defense and on the boards. You never once got on them about blocking out better, and they were doing a lousy job of blocking out. If you’re going to be a coach, you can’t lose the feel of the game.’ “It was hard to hear him say that. And I wonder if I hadn’t asked about the game if he would have brought it up. But I never forgot it.

NFL Tickets
The NFL’s popularity has never been higher — and tickets to NFL games have never been tougher to score. According to the latest Harris Poll released in January 2014, 35% of Americans call pro football their favorite sport — easily ahead of baseball’s 14%. Football fans witnessed greatness in 2013, as Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning destroyed the record books, setting the single-season records for passing yards and passing touchdowns. Manning and the Broncos fell short, however, losing Super Bowl XLVIII to the Seattle Seahawks.
Now in 2014, NFL fans across the country have a new season to look forward to — and with the NFL Draft and free agency coming up, fans can look forward to their favorite teams drafting and signing some of the best available players. Fans of all 32 teams can dream of reaching Super Bowl XLIX, which will be held at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona.
