”Ella Fitzgerald sings as if her voice were a musical instrument, rendering creative and innovative interpretations of all forms of music-jazz, scat, swing, bop pop, ballads, and Broadway show tunes. Her versatility and talent have won her worldwide fame and countless honors and awards.”

In New York City, she played the Waldorf-Astoria and became the first black artist to headline a bill at the Copacabana nightclub. The last of the Variety review of the latter concert read, “Add the Copa to Miss Fitzgerald’s Kayo [knock-out] list.”

Television was just coming into its own at about this time, and Ella made appearances on variety shows headlined by Garry Moore, Nat King Cole, Ed Sullivan, and Frank Sinatra. She made her symphony orchestra debut when Arthur Fiedler, a fan of her  recording of “Too Darn Hot,” hired her to sing it with the Boston Pops, and followed it up in 1958 with an appearance at the Hollywood Bowl with a symphony orchestra before an audience of some 22,000 people.

Ella was invited to perform at the Mocambo, a swanky Hollywood supper club, at the urging of actress Marilyn Monroe, who had heard her perform for two nights at a smaller place. Following the standing-room only success of that engagement, Ella became the first jazz performer to entertain in the Venetian Room of San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel. To gain that booking, Grant (her manager) told the hotel he would make up for any loss of income caused by Ella’s engagement. Instead, both Ella and the hotel ended up making money. While on the West Coast, she appeared in her second movie, Pete Kelly’s Blues, a story of jazz musicians who  became involved with gangsters, directed by “Dragnet” TV series star Jack Webb. He cast Ella in a featured role and gave her two songs, including the title song. Today the film has achieved cult status for its excellent score. She was also featured at big Las Vegas nightclubs such as the Flamingo, and at the first major American jazz festival, held in Newport, Rhode Island.

His father played classical saxophone, entertained his son with Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman records, and he sold musical instruments. He took D’Rivera to clubs like the Tropicana and to concert bands and orchestras.

The winner of eleven GRAMMY Awards, Cuban born Paquito D’Rivera is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. In 1991, D’Rivera received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Carnegie Hall for his contributions to Latin music. While his discography reflects a dedication and enthusiasm for Jazz, Bebop and Latin music, his contributions to classical music are impressive. In his passion to bring Latin repertoire to greater prominence, D’Rivera has successfully created, championed and promoted all types of classical compositions, including his three chamber compositions recorded live in concert with distinguished cellist Yo-Yo Ma in September 2003

Stan Kenton was the most prominent of those modern jazz men whose music was consciously influenced by “classical” forms. Shan had at least one other distinction: he was the most controversial of the modern music makers. Those who couldn’t stand his orchestra found it pretentious, devoid of wing, and just plain awful. Yet such denigrations could, at worst, characterize only his more formal concert pieces. Most of his music over the years did swing-enough so that his orchestra was voted best swing band of the year in the Down Beat polls of 1947, 1950 1951,1952,1953, and 1954! It is a fact that his music, which he call “progressive jazz,” often favored tightly written scores over improvisation; mixed tempos over strict time; and still other characteristics associated more with European music than with American jazz.. In particular, he was not beholden to the big beat. “It’s not the rhythm that counts,” he would say, “It’s the personalized warmth of the sound.” To paraphrase Duke: “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that warmth.” But was his music warmth? His numerous detractors protested that it was absolutely cold! Warmth or cold, it was loud. Stan’s screaming horns presaged the high decibels of the rock age, but his stalwarts did it without electronic amplification.
