Bill Bailey (December 8, 1912 – December 12, 1978) was an African-American tap dancer. He was the brother of Pearl Bailey. Bill was the first person to be recorded doing the Moonwalk, although he referred to it as the “Backslide”, in the film Cabin In the Sky (1943), starring Ethel Waters, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson and Lena Horne. He was trained briefly by Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. He was married to Pernell Bailey, and had nine children and many grandchildren.

Line dancing
Line dancing developed its own identity relatively late in the day. Although its roots in contra dancing are obvious and a few line dances were always performed, it did not become common until the late 1970’s. However, although it is a modern innovation, its step patterns remain true to its roots. Traditional forms, such as the schottische, the polka and the cha-cha-cha, are major influences, and like other forms of country and western dancing, line dances consist of a combination of set steps, which are the repeated after a quarter turn. The Twist in time gave birth to a whole variety of kindred dances-the Mashed Potato, the Pony, the Mess Around, the Majestic Slop, the Jerk, the Swim, the Mule, the Fly, the Monkey (make like you’re climbing a tree), the Boston Monkey (just keep both feet still and shake the hips and hands), the Philly Dog, the Watusi, the Hully Gully and the Chicken Back. And it gave birth, for better or worse, to something new on the nightclub scene-the discothe’que (record library), borrowed from the French. The psychologist concluded that the new dance craze represented nothing more than a return to the African ceremonial dances of yore and would disappear in no time at all. Disappear? There were learned examinations of the thing still going on in 1967. Thus Edward M. Levine, Associate Professor of Political Science at the Illinois Institute of Technology, writing for the Israel Annals of Psychiatry, found that people do the Twist because they are “anxiously in search of, or uncertain about, their identity and individuals.” And that’s not all. “The music, rhythm, volume and temp,” the professor went on, “all converge to obliterate pulsating and deeply felt sensuality. An extremely eroticized sense of self-awareness is quickly aroused, as all else recedes into oblivion. Small wonder, then, that the dance is often characterized by orgiastic movements and by flights into auto-erotic sensations. Almost wholly unfitted in its stimulation of the emotions, the Twist induces emotional introversion.”
