Yakina Canutt- Rodeo Rider, Legendary Stuntman, Movie Star, Director was while working on Mascot serials that Canutt practiced and perfected his most famous stunts, including the drop from a stagecoach that he would employ in John Ford‘s 1939 Stagecoach. That famous stunt in Stagecoach was filmed near Chimney Rock on Rabbit Dry Lake, west of Lucerne Valley, California. He first did it in Riders of the Dawn in 1937 while doubling for Jack Randall. In his 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark, Steven Spielberg paid homage to Canutt, recreating the stunt when stuntman Terry Leonard (doubling for Harrison Ford) ‘dropped’ from the front of a German transport truck, was dragged underneath (along a prepared trench) and then climbed up the back and round to the front again^{. Both Gordon Jr. and David had worked with me on Shaft. Their coverage provided magazines with unique intimate stories. Now Gordon Jr. was also hoping to direct films. I was on a week’s leave from Hollywood when he handed me a screenplay titled Superfly. “Read it over tonight, Dad, and let me know what you think.” Gene smiled. “Looks like we’re going to have another director in the family.” Superfly got a thorough reading on Saturday night and Gordon come the following morning for my opinion. After considering the meager budget he would be given to work with, I gave my opinion. “Forget it, you’ll run out of money before a month’s gone.” Dispirited, Gordon went across the room to gaze out of a window. Gene spoke to me softly, just above a whisper. “You made your first film with a lot of help. Now your son wants to do his. Why not give him your help?” I took a deep breath. Then I wrote out a big check and thrust it into his pocket. My advice to him that morning was completely practical. And I was also quite sure that my check would disappear into a fog of nothing. I can now tell the delightful truth. Superfly was completed and hailed as a success when it came out in the summer of 1972. It made Ron O’Neal (who had been turned down for Shaft as being “too light”) a star, and Curtis Mayfield’s soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy. So, having made the right decision, my eldest child was on his way. Proudly I patted his back, laughed, and gave him some more advice. “From now on think long and hard before soliciting your father’s opinion, especially about screenplays.”

Gene Hackman was producer Sherwood Schwartz’s first choice in 1969 to play the role of Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch, but Paramount executives said no.

Before the advent of video rentals, most movies were released once and then consigned to history. Studios brought big hits, like Gone with the Wind, back into first-run movie houses, but the real money was usually made in the first release. Disney, however, soon learned that successive generations could rediscover a family movie, as if it were brand new. For cartoon audiences, he established a “generation” at about seven years. In its original 1937 release, Snow white more than earned back its costs, grossing $8.5 million. But that was just the beginning. In the United States alone, it was re-released six times by 1993. Dubbed into ten languages and distributed in forty-six countries, it has grossed $100 million. Fantasia, which barely broke even on its first release in 1940, was distributed widely in the 1960x and finally became a hit. It was most recently released in 1990, it’s fiftieth anniversary. In controlling titles, the Walt Disney Company has also established a unique policy in video sales: placing movies on the market only for a limited period, to generate buying excitement to be repeated at another interval in the future. Video only reinforce Walt Disney’s long-standing contention that animated figures could lead for richer commercial lives than their flesh-and-blood counterparts: Cartoons don’t grow out of date and their stars never age or retire.

Warner Brothers bravely agreed to go with our triad as the only producers attached to Private Benjamin. The executives were not only trusting that two women and a man could produce this film, they were also banking on a story about a woman going into the aArmy bringing a good financial return. The Holly wood film industry at tha time was still controlled by men. But none of us even thought of that as a problem or perceived any glass ceiling at the time. Not at Warner brothers, anyway. Bob Shapiro, the head of production, loved this movie and what it had to say. He told us from the outset, “If I cna’t make this film, then I want to be first in line to see it.”

I’m just a big scaredy-cat when it’s dark in the house and there’s a tapping on the widow or a noise under the bed-don’t even ask me to check it out. You go see while I hide out. I’m not a total coward; I mean, I love scary movies. Even when I was a little kid, I watched them: movies like The House on Haunted Hill, Ten Little Indians, and Thirteen Ghosts. But then around the 1970s the goriness came in: Last House on the Left-I’m talking bloody! Scare me, okay, but don’t make me watch the ax come down and the arm get chopped off and the blood come squirting out. I beg you; please don’t bleed all over me! And how’d you like The Exorcist? That movie changed my life. I was standing waiting in that long, long line when Andrew, my friend from the basketball team, came out of the movie looking whipped. He was actually shaking. Andrew was pretty tough, so when he told me, “Don’t’ go in there!” I should have listened-but no, I was too cool for that. So two hours later I was creeping to the car with my jacket pulled up over my head. I could hardly drive home, checking for Linda Blair to pop up in my rearview mirror. So right then and there, I invented a new ghost rule especially for the car: No ghost can get you with the dome light on. Yes, I was seventeen, but hey-that’s a rule that helps protect me even now.
