The Decade of Dazzle
American cars of the 1953-1962 era have great gobs of personality. They’re colorful, flamboyant and even ostentatious. some push good taste to the limit, but they do it with character. Most came with the stamp of particular designer in every contour and curve. The concept of the corporate car, shaped by computer or by committee, hadn’t arrived yet. So, no one confused a Chrysler with a Chevrolet or either on with a Ford. From a technical standpoint, the “advances” of the era were actually refinements of old ideas like automatic transmission, power accessories, air conditioning and supercharging. They were improved and made more readily available, but it was the designers that brought real change during these years. It was the “Designer Decade.”
1963-1972
Wild in the Streets
America went wild in the streets during its eighth decade of automobiles. The ’50s had taught Detroit that racing sold cars. In the ’60s, it decided to build race cars for the street. They were machines with more brute force than anyone needed to fetch milk and eggs from the market. Shiny, noisy,Coke bottle-shaped cars with subtle chrome highlights and fat tires mounted on spooked wheels. They looked mean, menacing and macho. Fender
badges, hood scoops and body stripes advertised their wild intention to melt the pavement and set the streets on fire.
1973-1982
The Age of Reason
In a sense, the gradual demise of the convertible after 1972 and its revival in 1982 symbolizes the ninth decade of the American automobile.. This was a period in which the domestic car changed gradually from a gas -guzzling gargantuan into a thinking man’s
machine. A combination of social consciousness, Japanese competition and OPEC oil embargoes pressured Detroit into virtually reinventing the automobile. Change came shakily and was somewhat halfhearted at first. Cumbersome crash-bumpers, not-so-efficient emission controls and a short-lived seat belt interlock system caused as many problems as they solved. Then, a second gas crunch in 1979 solidified the industry’s
resolve to wards self-improvement. By 1982, it was apparent that this age of reaction and reason had resulted in the rebirth of American leadership in automotive design and engineering.
