The history of Rock
“Rocket 88”
Jackie Brenston’s 1951 classic, “Rocket 88”, is widely considered the first rock and roll record. It was produced by the legendary Sam Phillip (March 1951) at his tiny Memphis Recording service a year before he formed Sun Records, the label that soon became synonymous with the birth of rock and roll. Phillips subsequently leased the recording to Chess Records. With its automobile lyrics aimed at teens, and featuring vocals by Kings of Rhythm baritone saxophonist Jackie Brenston, the song maintained a boogie-wooggie rhythm (featuring jazzy New Orleans-style piano playing by Ike Turner) and incorporated the blues progression in a driving Memphis jump blues style. It used a heavily amplified guitar (the all-important rock and roll instrument borrowed from blues and country music) played by Willie Kizart.

MEAT LOAF Bat Out of Hell
Mention the name Meat Loaf, and people will smile, giggle. Somehow, you just don’t think of a 250-pound rock star whose image is that of a beer-can-eating, rock-chewing lug who throws women around onstage as someone who would go out and get married. No matter that Meat’ Bat Out of Hess was one of the biggest-selling LP’s of the seventies, or that he is a trained actor with an operatic tenor voice who has appeared in the stage production of Hair and the films The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Americatbon. People still say, “Who would marry Meat Loaf?” The answer is Leslie Edmonds, who met Meat in January 1979, when she was working as an assistant studio manager for Albert Grossman (he was the ponytailed manager for Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin) at his recording studio in Woodstock, New York. At the time, neither Meat nor Leslie were looking to get married. Meat had sworn in several interviews that there was no room in his life for woman. And marriage was obviously not a major priority for Leslie, who had given birth to a daughter, Pearl, in 1975 but had never bothered to marry the father, a musician in Joplin’s Full Tilt Boogie Band. However, Leslie says their lighting bolt came down from heaven and said, ‘You must marry each other,’” Three weeks later they were married by a ninety-six-year-old priest at Todd Rundgren’s home in Woodstock. Pop singer Karla Bonoff sang “Here Comes the Bride.”

Rockin’ in Time intrigues students by providing a social history of Rock and Roll music and explaining its influence.

This book was written to address an area that seldom has been discussed.  Rather than a compellation of the many bands in rock history or a guide to teach the musical notation of rock, this book uncovers the reasons for the various trends and types of rock and roll.  It places rock and roll in the context of the social issues that surround and shape it, dealing with the influence on rock music of such trends as technological advances, the development of the music business, demographic change and the baby boom, economic shifts, and the civil rights movement.

The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys brought surf music to national prominence. Raised in the suburb of Hawthorne, California, the boys- leader Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl and Dennis, cousin Mike Love and Al Jardine, a classmate of Brian’s at El Camino Junior College-began to play in 1961. After trying out several names, they settled on the Pendletones, a play on the Pendelton shirts that were favored by California teens. The ban smoothed the rough edges of the fuzzy, twanging surf instrumental. Around the Clock’ shocked me,” Brian Wilson once told a reporter. “I mean, I was so electrified by the experience – that song was really it,” The group combined the rawness of the 1950s’ rock with glossy harmonies gleaned from white vocal groups such as the Four Freshmen. The blend resulted in a bright, airy, snappy sound that embodied the California myth and, as with the girl-group sound, reflected the general optimism of the Kennedy presidency. These California teens recorded their new sound with the help of their domineering, sometimes abusive, father, Murry Wilson, who managed a heavy machinery import business and in his spare time composed songs. Murry introduced the boys to music publisher Hite Morgan who was looking for new material. In October 1961, the band auditioned for Morgan. “We’ve written a song about the surfing sport and we’d like to sing it for you,” pestered the Wilson brothers. Morgan quietly listened to the tune and exclaimed, “Drop everything; we’re going to record your song. I think it’s good.” Within two hours, the group recorded “Surfin’.” Morgan took the demo the local Candix label, which released the record in December 1961 and changed the group’s name to the Beach Boys. Commented Mike Love about the name change: “We didn’t even know we were the Beach Boys until the song came out.” Within weeks, “Surfin” topped the California charts and reached number seventy-five on the national Top One Hundred.

Editorial Reviews

Nils Lofgren’s new solo album release is a classic Nils, rock album featuring a collection of 12 songs. 11 are new originals by Nils and “”Irish Angel”” is beautiful ballad written by Bruce McCabe that Nils has been performing in his shows recently. “”Let Her Get Away”” is a haunting acoustic gem co-written with Root Boy Slim. Featuring rough, raw blues dobros and searing electric guitars to beautiful acoustic tracks, “”Old School”” is classic Nils at his diverse best. Featuring the legendary Paul Rodgers, Lou Gramm and Sam Moore as guest vocalists, this album has it all and promises to rank among his best.

GOLDEN OLDIES
One Day in Late September 1966, our phone rang and the operator said, “London calling.” At first I was wondering who in the heck was calling me – I didn’t know anybody over there. It was Jimmy, and he was all excited as he told me, “Dad, looks like I’m on my way to the big time.” He went on to say he was in England, auditioning for a bass player and a drummer. “I’m gonna call the group the Jimi Hendrix Experience,” he said, “and I’m gonna have my name spelled J-i-m-i.”I thought the group’s name was strange, but I liked it. All these strange names, they had around then- Vanilla Fudge and the who and the What and the Why. I told him, “That sounds great.” Jimi also talked about how he was going to sing. “Yeah, dad,” he said, “all these other guys sing, even though they ain’t got no voice, but heck, I’m gonna do it too,” Jimi asked how I was doing, so I said, “I’m doing okay.” He told me he’d had a time finding out where I was living, because when he was in the service I was still living on Yesler Way. He found out where I’d moved from Benson and Ernestine, who told him, “Oh, yeah, your dad’s gotten married to a Japanese woman”. Jimi was all excited for me. He said, “I hear you’ve moved to another place and you’ve gotten married again. Sound like you’re getting ready to settle down, dad.” “Yeah.” Jimi was glad June and I got married because he’d often asked me when I was going to get married again. I’d always said, “Marriage is easy to get into and hard to get out of. It’s not one of them things that you can jump in and out of.” Jimi also told me he felt so good about finally being able to do things for me financially. He said, “I’m going to buy you a home. I’ m gonna buy you this and that. Whatever you need, just let me know.” “Right now we’re in the process of buying a home, so that’s taken care of. You just take care of yourself. The family is doing okay. I’ll holler when I need something. You just keep you nose clean and stay out of trouble and take care of yourself.” I later found out that Chas Chandler, the bass player for the Animals, was the one who discovered Jimi. He took Jimi from the group that he was playing with at the Cafe’ Wha? In Greenwich Village and took him to England to build a group around him, and that was the Experience. When Jimi first went to England, I didn’t think that he was going to be that successful, but then I started getting reports on him after he started playing as the Experience. There was a notice of him in some music magazines, and then one of my stepdaughters saw a picture of Jimi with a caption that said, “The Wild Man of Borneo.” When she first looked at the picture, she thought it was me for a minute. She said, “What’s Al doing in London?” she looked again and said, “Ooh, that’s Jimi Hendrix- “The Wild Man of Borneo’ and ‘The New sensation in London.’” Jimi was on his way.

Musisc history would be incomplete without the Jimi Hendrix story. This book reveals the personal side of Jimi Hendrix. Well written, great pictures. Only 185 pages, but you might want to hug the book for awhile. Real Cool man.

Jimi Hendrix

Whether you’re into rock music or not, you know the name Hendrix: He of the guitar tricks, flamboyant clothing, an gravity-defying Afro. The Hendrix who tore the roof off at  1969’s Woodstock festival with his legendary version of the national anthem; the self-taught instrumentalist who revolutionized the way the electric guitar is played; the oft-imitated Hendrix who who became on of the most revered musicians of our time- and all of this before he reached 30.  – Jessica Dufresne / Uptown

In my mind, music is made by those whom music saves. Jimi Hendrix could not have done anything else with himself. John Lee Hooker, what else is he going to do? Work at McDonalds?–Henry Rollins, interviewed in Rolling Stone

1956 Elvis Hits It Big

Elvis Presley had been a professional musician for two years when “Heartbreak Hotel,” his first single recorded for RCA, hit the airwaves in January 1956. The song caught on with teenagers, rising to number one on the pop and country charts and number five in the rhythm and blues listings. The 21-year-old singer had a capital year, touring 24 states, starring in his first movie, and repeatedly topping the charts. Scandalized adults called Elvis’s sexy sound and onstage gyrations tasteless at best and “a new low in spiritual degeneracy” at worst. But they were hopelessly outnumbered, especially after he appeared on Ed Sullivan’s highly rated prime-time variety show and converted adult viewers all over America to rock and roll. Although Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Bill Haley had earlier rock hits, it was Elvis’s phenomenal success that took rock and roll from novelty to mainstream. His popularity was undimmed by his death in 1977 at age 42, and by the 1990’s his fans had bought more than a billion records.

  1. I have noticed that in digital camera models, extraordinary sensors help to aim automatically. The actual sensors with some cameras change in contrast, while others use a beam associated with infra-red (IR) light, specially in low lumination. Higher spec cameras often use a combination of both programs and may have Face Priority AF where the dslr camera can ‘See’ your face as you concentrate only upon that. Thank you for sharing your thinking on this web site.
